The thing to remember about democracies is this: democracy sucks. Ever heard of tyranny of the majority? Well, look at the tea party Republicants in office, and all the crap going on. Look at how many completely stupid people there are in the world. (IE, every single person on this entire fucking planet. Myself included.) And those are the people you're trusting your rights, your freedoms, to. Those are the people you're entrusting to vote in the people who make the laws. Your government is in the hands of blithering idiots who wouldn't know a Higgs Boson from a strawberry scone if you drew them a picture.

And guess what? The United States of America WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE A DEMOCRACY. The Founding Fathers knew how much Democracy sucked. They made their country partially democratic, but mostly a Republic. ("To the Republic, for which it stands...") That's right, kiddies: everything about how the USA was set up was designed to try to have the best parts of democracy and counterbalance the bad parts. All those different branches of government, the checks and balances, the Bill of Rights, all of it was designed as a Republic.

In the early days, the Democrats were the idiots and the Republicans had the right idea of things. Somehow, that got switched around, and then somehow the Democrats became completely useless.

So instead of making things worse by digging deeper into the cess pit of democracy, and then spreading our democratic filth abroad, we need to go back to the beginning, and reset this country as the Republic it is supposed to be. Though not quite exactly the same way... I think we should be a democratic socialist Republic. Free health care, social programs for the needy, government-funded police, fire fighters, etc; national parks... there are benefits to living in a democratic socialist Republic.

And the thing of it is, for a while there the USA was a democratic socialist state. Then the Republicans had to go and ruin it with their corruption.

What's most galling is how many people are just standing around watching this country become a fascist state (and no, I'm not a tea partier. The US has been turning fascist since at least the time of Ronald Reagan.), pandering to the super rich at the expense of everyone else.

Why isn't everyone in the country angry as Hell? Because we're being distracted by shiny objects the corporations keep flinging at us. But you'll see. The day will come when the situation will get so bad that people will have to resort to hunting down stray dogs to feed their family, and finally they'll all wake up, and rise up.

After all, history has shown us events very similar to today's, before. The last time the super-rich laughed and gorged themselves while everyone else starved, the French royal family lost their heads. It's only a matter of time before the same thing happens in the United States.
