So somebody on FB is like "you have the wrong idea about Christians" and since Kitty Payne made a comment indicating this person was possibly foreign, I explained it like this:
I don't know how it is in other countries, but here in the US, most Christians range from "get away from me, I don't want your crazy to rub off on me, please stop proselytizing at me, I don't want to catch your mind cancer" to "full-on fascist." Sane Christians in the US are like gas prices below $11 a gallon in Europe, IE it might happen but you'll have better chances of finding a wild bandersnatch.
Basically Britain and a bunch of other places offloaded all their lunatic fringe Christians into the North American colonies and so what you'd consider the lunatic fringe is not only normal, they're running the government. If you've ever wondered why the US seems like a hotbed of insanity with out of control capitalism, no health care, etc... it's because the lunatics are running the asylum.
Now I know that sounds ableist but consider the fact I'm autistic, with ADHD, part of a multiple collective, clinical depression and anxiety... and yet I'm one of the saner people in the US.
And anyway, societal insanity is a different animal from individual mental illness. Not like, two species in the same genus, but more like the convergent evolution that makes rabbits and hares look related when they're not. Individual mental illness is a serious topic and is something that the individual can't really help. While societal insanity is mostly comprised of otherwise sane people who are not very bright, believing ridiculous nonsense that infects their brain like a memetic disease. Individual mental illness isn't contagious, but memetic insanity very much IS.
Using that metaphor, the Christianity of the rest of the world may be like herpes, a bit annoying perhaps but mostly harmless... yet the Christianity of the US is like COVID-19 -- highly contagious, kills a lot of people, permanently scars or otherwise fricks up the people who don't die of it, and causes massive societal upheaval. The only vaccine for the US strain of Christianity is critical thinking and reason in general, neither of which are taught in schools in the US.
