On a video about Steven Universe about a possible blind fusion, I suggested that maybe the Gems can see through their gem if it’s positioned in place of an eye, and someone disagreed with me. But I think I convinced them.

Them: The pupil is the main part of the eye that lets light into the eye in order for us to see. If that's covered up you can't see no more, homie

Me: Yes, but they're not human, or even biological. They're Clarke-tech AIs that resemble humans but are basically hard-light constructs like the doctor on Star Trek Voyager. If the light can come out of the gem to create their body, it's possible and logical that the light can go into the gem from the outside, especially since we know already that information from the body can and does go into the gem (if it didn't, they'd lose all life memories every time they poofed). Especially if I'm right that they're solar powered slash powered by ambient radiation. Because according to canon, they get all the energy they need when they form, but given they live thousands of years or longer, that defies the laws of thermodynamics so hard as to be ridiculous, so they have to be getting extra power from somewhere else, too.

Them: Huh. Never thought of it that way. Thanks for the enlightenment

Me: Granted, the crewniverse never says they're AIs anywhere that I know of, but there's really nothing else they *could* be. No way does an immortal optical computer with a holographic body that mimics a bipedal organic lifeform just *evolve.*

And now that I think about it, since they reproduce artificially by injecting something into the ground with machines, that just *screams* "AI" to me.

Edited to add: Centipeedle seems to be able to see with her eye-gem.
