The education system of the United States needs a massive overhaul. Scratch that, it needs a complete replacement. The system as it stands now was designed for a world that no longer exists. It was designed for a world where most people went into high-paying manufacturing jobs. Most of those jobs don't exist anymore, are being outsourced, or don't pay worth shit. There are too many people fighting over those jobs anyway.

In today's world, the big money is in information. Internet, data entry, and service jobs. Even then, there are too many people and not enough jobs. The whole system needs replacing. We need a system that allows people some freedom; we need a system wherein people who, through no fault of their own, are unemployed no longer need to stress out. We need a system that recognizes that there WILL be lots of people unemployed, and gives them other options. We need a system that recognizes that not everyone can BE employed, and that it isn't because of laziness or unworthiness, just the luck of the draw.

The education system was designed to make mindless little workers. That was what was needed back then. But now, we have more of those than we'll ever need. We need more thinkers and dreamers, more brainiacs, and more creatives.

We need to introduce classes on critical thinking starting at an early age and continuing through every grade.

We need to make college education public, so more people can actually get the education they need. As college stands now, it is a SEVERE waste of time, energy, and money. As the public education system now stands, it too is a severe waste of time, energy, and tax money. WE NEED TO REPLACE IT.

We need an economic system that is not all about growth and profit. We're out of room to grow, there's no way to profit any more. Already, the corporations increase their profit by undermining society and themselves. If we keep going at this rate, civilization is going to collapse, and then all their money isn't going to mean squat.

Capitalism is dead, but like a zombie, it continues to keep walking. Pieces are rotting and falling off, but it keeps going.

Capitalism is dead. Communism doesn't work. We need something else. And we need it NOW.
alex_antonin: (Hail Santa!)
Now that we've just celebrated Thanksgiving National Gluttony Day, the Capitalism religion's third favorite holiday, and Black Friday - Capitalism's second favorite holiday - is coming to a close, now we approach the highest holiday of the religion that is Capitalism: Xmas! When an old man in a red suit (a fat man, no less) somehow squeezes his fat ass down a chimney1 (something most people don't even have anymore), gorges himself on cookies and milk, leaves behind shitloads of Stuff for good little girls and boys, and flies off in a sleigh pulled by his magical antlered minions. (Also I think there might be something in there about a baby Demigod born in a barn, but that might be another religion altogether.)

I may disagree with many of the tenets of the religion called Capitalism2 (especially its tenets "A person's entire worth lies solely in the amount of money they are worth" and "No money to buy food, shelter, and other basics? Tough shit!") But I do like Stuff. And money. I *love* money. <subliminal>SEND ME MONEY NOW! YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO!</subliminal> So it's not all bad.

Anyway, for these reasons, and because it's almost December, I'm switching my default icon to the Hail Santa icon.

1 = Santa must be The Blob from the third X-Men movie: big and fat, but able to morph into a skinny guy at will in order to make it down the chimney.

2 = Capitalism bases itself off of "Survival of the fittest," ignoring the fact that humans got to their position by cooperating with one another. (Or despite their constant bickering, however you want to interpret it.)
