You wouldn’t steal something from another adult, even a gift, but at least adults can deal with it emotionally. Kids can’t. Stealing your kid’s possessions is emotional abuse, even if you gave it to them as a gift. I don’t know if it qualifies as financial abuse too or not, but it’s similar.
It’s disgusting how many things people can get away with doing to kids that would never fly legally when done to adults. Stealing their stuff, gross violations of their privacy like taking their door off the hinges, forcibly causing bodily harm even to infants just to put earrings in their ears or doctors mutilating their genitals (even here in the U.S.!) without even needing to inform the parents, the list goes on. It’s all abuse even if you don’t think it is.
