Writer's Block: Smoked Out
Nov. 21st, 2008 11:16 am[Error: unknown template qotd]Well there's a simple solution to that: make smoking illegal! Seriously, I have no pity for smokers for any reason. I can like them alright as people, but I will never approve of their smoking. And anyone who would smoke anytwhere that a non-smoker with virgin lungs might get a lungful of their crap, I have absolutely zero respect or pity for. If you want to smoke in the privacy of your own home, or in a designated smoking room that is sealed off from healthy people, then be my guest. But a smoking section in any kind of restaurant is like a peeing section in a pool, only about 10,000 times worse. So I say hooray for the indoors smoking bans! Not everyone who drinks alcohol wants to smoke or smell smoke, and not everyone who goes to a bar is there for alcohol or smoking. My parents met in a bar and they both drink about once or twice a year at the most; Mom was drinking diet coke when she and Dad met.
Honestly, to say that smoking should be allowed in bars is like saying medical marijuana patients should be allowed to smoke their pot around all the other glaucoma patients. So if the smokers can't wait till they get home to light up, and hence have to be cold and/or wet to smoke, well that's their decision. Though frankly, if smokers are legally allowed to commit suicide, then all forms of suicide and consenting euthenasia should be allowed as well.
Actually, I call it suicide but really it's combined suicide and homicide. They're slowly killing not only themselves but those around them. So I was not kidding about making smoking illegal. It may not stop people smoking, but it will drive smoking into secrecy so we healthy-lunged folks don't have to breathe the same toxic air they do.
Now don't get me wrong, though I will never approve of smoking, I have already said I can like smokers as people, as long as they keep their fumes away from non-smokers. If they do that, then they're okay. But I could never be friends with nor tolerate anyone who smoked where healthy people might breathe it in.
