The kind of people who cry about mistreating Nazis are generally the same people who have no problem calling for the execution of child molesters, as well as being vehemently opposed to letting such people talk about their proclivities online. So it's clear they understand the concept that some things people do and say are not protected by the right to free speech, they just don't want to admit that the reason they oppose the mistreatment of Nazis is because they ARE Nazis. And yes, there are "moderates" and neoliberals that defend Nazis. My point remains, because in the US political system, those moderates and neoliberals spout Nazi rhetoric while claiming to not be Nazis.
