One or the other, usually.

Humans are weird. On the one hand, humans are fragile enough that you get most humans through history dying of infected booboos, or got hit on the chest with a ball too hard at the exact wrong moment, or died from blood clots or weak blood vessels, or just went for a swim and got their brain eaten by an amoeba...
...while on the other hand there are humans who get shot in the brain and survive, or got a railroad spike in their brain and lived for many decades more, or lost all their limbs in an explosion but didn't die, or some other absurd thing. It's like humans roll the dice every time they're about to experience something harmful, and roll either a 1 or a 20 every time to see whether they live or die.
Like "Ah, you got a one; a creature the size of your thumbnail bit your big toe and you died of its venom." or "You get impaled through the brain by an iron spike, a tree crushes the entire lower half of your body, and you're neck deep in an alligator-infested swamp surrounded by hungry gators. Roll. (Rolls) Oh you got a 20. You survive all your injuries and get rescued. You live the rest of your days in a wheelchair but you live to be 100 years old." Very little in-between.
