In Christian mythos, Satan *must* be a god equal in power to God; the only other option is that God is an evil bastard.

That's a heresy in the varieties of Christianity derived from the Catholic or Orthodox churches.

It's really popular with a lot of the weirder offshoots of Christianity, because it lets them avoid the complexities of trying to explain evil.

And yes, there are ways to reconciling God not being a bastard with evil existing. Mostly, it's an unavoidable consequence of free will.

But free will is something that the churches that like to blame things on Satan aren't at all comfortable with. Because for free will to mean anything *they* would have to admit that you have to allow for people making "bad" choices.
